Exodus 3:13-14 The Revelation of God’s Name

And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. Ex. 3:13-14

Moses, in preparation for the fulfillment of his powerful ministry to bring the Israelites out of Egypt, first asked God for a revelation of his name. Prior to the burning bush, the Israelites knew that God was named Yahweh, but they didn’t really know what Yahweh meant. Moses received a further revelation – that God’s name means “I am that I am”.

It was necessary for that generation of the children of Israel to have a greater revelation of God’s name so that they could access God to a greater extent than their forefathers. Through the power of God’s name, they were to destroy their enemies and inherit the Promised Land.

The name of God is a revelation of God. The more we know God’s name, the more we know him as he is. The more revelation of God we have,  the more we can experience him. The more we experience God, the more we can walk in his ways upon the earth, and reveal his glory to the world.
